Renewed Diplomacy and Lingering Crises – UN Addresses Yemen and Afghanistan

Published on: 14 May, 2025

Greece’s ambassador to the United Nations, Evangelos Sekeris, is expected to deliver a joint statement on behalf of the signatories of the Shared Commitments on Women, Peace and Security, focusing on the deteriorating conditions for women in Yemen. The intervention is likely to highlight the compounded vulnerabilities faced by women and girls amid one of the world’s most protracted humanitarian crises, underscoring the urgent need for inclusive peacebuilding and sustained international support.

The statement will coincide with the United Nations Security Council’s monthly briefing on Yemen, where Special Envoy Hans Grundberg and a representative of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) are scheduled to provide updates. This session marks the Council’s first formal engagement on Yemen since the announcement by the President of the United States of a cessation of hostilities with the Houthi movement—an unexpected shift in tone that may open diplomatic space for de-escalation. Whether this development translates into tangible progress on the ground remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, the daily briefing by Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, will feature Andrew Saberton, Deputy Executive Director for Management at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Saberton is expected to share insights from his recent mission to Afghanistan, offering a sobering account of the challenges faced by women and healthcare providers under the Taliban regime. His remarks are likely to echo broader concerns over access to reproductive health services and the shrinking humanitarian operating space in the country.
