Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral scholar at Georgetown University, has been released after spending nearly two months in immigration detention. A federal judge ruled on Wednesday that his detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) violated both the First Amendment right to free speech and the Fifth Amendment right to due process.
Khan Suri, who had been held at the Prairieland Detention Center in Texas since March, was arrested and targeted for deportation last month under the Trump administration. Judge Patricia Giles, in her ruling, found that the detention was unlawful.
The Department of Homeland Security had accused Khan Suri of “actively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media.” Khan Suri, who has been a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown for the past three years, denied these allegations.
